I saw an interesting segment on the Today Show recently where Matt Lauer interviewed Mark Kitchens, a representative from AARP, to discuss a new study from the organization that debunks some of the top myths out there about baby boomers. As a baby boomer myself, I was interested to hear what the survey revealed including the fact that boomers aren’t great at saving their money, aren’t downsizing their homes and are defining the “sandwich generation.” But, what I found to be the most fascinating was the fact that the survey supported what I’ve been seeing for the past few years now: Baby boomers are not retiring early but rather staying actively engaged in the workplace. In fact, we are the generation that is “redefining what it means to retire” as research shows. I think these statistics from the segment speak for themselves:
Though the segment referred to the fact that this generation has not been successful at saving money toward retirement, therefore making it hard to retire, I firmly believe that the baby boomer generation WANTS to work. My business is built on this idea that accomplished professionals with 20+ years of experience are looking to work on their own terms and we’ve been quite successful thus far in providing those professionals the next way to work. I’d love to hear from other boomers out there on what they thought of the segment!
